Take 20 Hours and Become an Expert in Anything [VIDEO]

Take 20 Hours and Become an Expert in Anything VIDEOIt doesnt take 10,000 hours to learn a new skill. It takes 20. And heres how googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Josh Kaufman, author of The Personal MBA, has demystified Malcolm Gladwells famous 10,000 (supposedly the amount of time you need to invest in acquiring a new skill). He says you can achieve the same mastery in 45 minutes a day, for a month.Heres the path to learning.1. Deconstruct the skillDecide what you actually want to be able to do, and break it down into manageable parts. Do some research and figure out what the people who succeed at this skill had to learn along the way and where you can learn it too Do you need to sign up for a class, or lessons, or tackle a reading list? Invest in some equipment or supplies?2. Learn enough to self-correct. Learn just enough that you can actually tell when youre making a mistake. This is where a teacher comes in natel, whether its one-on-o ne or in a class setting. If your desired skill is a musical or dance-based one, this probably means a lot of listening and watching to pros performing so you learn to tell the difference between a good performance and a great one. Perhaps even record yourself so you can rewatch and examine your technique for improvement.3. Remove practice barriers i.e. remove distractions, yes, like you, Internet.Other common barriers include pets, children, day jobs (ok, maybe you just need breaks or a little alone time, not a full removal). There are a ton of productivity apps that might come in handy herePomodoro helps you time, apps like Self-Control (mac) and Freedom (PC) block all web access from your computer, and leaving your technology outside to go practice hula hooping is its own reward.4. Practice at least 20 hours. Finally, yep, practice for 20 hours. Its inescapablewhether its 20 hours or 10,000, at a certain point theres nothing to do but spend time practicing the thing you want to le arn to love to do. Pace yourself, take breaks, but otherwise, stick to it

4 Reasons You Should Consider Working for a Startup

4 Reasons You Should Consider Working for a Startup4 Reasons You Should Consider Working for a StartupElecting to work for a departureup is a big decision, given that the failure rate of venture-backed startups is on average between 60 to 79 percent, according to investment firm Cambridge Associates. So, why should you consider working for a company that you know has a more than 50-percent chance of failure? Here are four major reasons you might want to work for a startup.1. Opportunity to take on new responsibilitiesWorking for an established company with a long history means that in most cases, your job will be predictable and you will do similar things for an extended period of time. In contrast, working at a startup requires agility, as you will need to continually adapt and change what you are doing based on customer feedback. As a result of this constant change, startup employees have lots of responsibilities outside their job descriptions. New scenarios will arise that will requ ire the most suitable person to step up to do the job. By taking on new responsibilities, you can gain valuable skills that could help you land a promotion or another job down the line.2. Collaborative environmentAt a startup, the internal structure is usually flexible, meaning you can to talk with all kollektiv members and contribute to discussions whenever you have an idea. At a larger company, the bureaucratic structure can make it very difficult to get your ideas across to the CEO.Given this flat structure, most decisions at startups are made by the group as a whole, incorporating viewpoints from different team members. For example, if you work in marketing, you might request feedback from developers and designers at your firm in order to understand their views of your product and determine whether they align with users expectations.3. Ability to innovateWhereas larger corporations may have strict processes in place that you have to follow, startups often have more room for inno vation. If you come up with a promising idea, you can typically communicate it to management with ease, given the flat structure of the organization. And if a higher-up decides your idea is worth implementing, the implementation process will probably occur much more quickly than it would at a big corporation.Timmy Ghiurau, one of the first employees of The Eye Tribe- a startup later acquired by Oculus- highlights the culture of innovation he experienced when working thereWorking for a startup is a great experience since it focuses a lot on the product and the core team in the beginning, thus giving you the opportunity to have your ideas and your voice taken into consideration. The benefit of working in a startup is that it cuts all the corners and redundant processes that are normally found in big companies. It can be an inspiring environment where you have the courage and experience to start something on your own as well.4. Job satisfactionFinally, at a startup you are often just a step away from the customers, so you can see first-hand how your team is creating value for them. You can contribute to the startups significant milestones, such as the first 10.000 followers on social media and the first 100.000 unique users. You can actually observe how your career, expectations, and responsibilities increase after each achieved milestone. It feels like being part of a family, of something special that is having a real impact. In order to land a job at a startup, be sure to update your resume and tailor it to the company.Andrei Kurtuy is the CMO and one of three co-founders of Novorsum. An idealist and optimist, he believes we should always strive for improvement and efficiency. In his free time, he loves running, reading, and wandering around cities to discover new places.

Important Job Skills for Engineers

Important Job Skills for EngineersImportant Job Skills for EngineersEngineering is one of the fastest growing and most exciting fields today, offering new college graduates significant earning potential, job stability, and plenty of personal satisfaction. There are manydifferent jobs available for engineers. Not everyone can be an engineer, however, as the demands in terms of skills and knowledge are intense. Education and Job Requirements Most aspiring engineers will need at least a bachelors degree from an engineering school or university, and the best-paid engineers usually have a masters degree or Ph.D. in their field. Besides the proper educational background and relevant technical experience, you will need to demonstrate many so-called soft skills in reservierung to advance your engineering career. Soft skillsare those whichrequire interpersonal adaptability among different kinds of people, problems, and situations. For example, leadership and communication are interpersona l skills that successful engineers employ on a regular basis. These soft skills complement hard skills, such as programming or a working knowledge of chemistry. What Kind of Skills Do You Need to be an Engineer? There are several different branches of engineering, each with distinct technicalskill sets. Within a given field, credentials and expectations may vary significantly among these various fields of engineering. When youre applying for jobs carefully read the job descriptions specific to your field and emphasize the hard skills applicable to your education and experience in your resume, cover letter, and interview. In contrast, the soft, or social skills will vary less from one industry of engineering to another. Initially, these soft skills may not seem quite as important as the hard skills, but most interviewers will pick up on interpersonal deficiencies in your interview. Further, technically-trained engineers often struggle to obtain promotions after they are hired if they lack the soft skills described below. Industry Skills Because engineers operate in a variety of industries, some hard skills are vital only to specific industries. That being said, each hard skill below is important in most engineering work. Engineers are creators in everything from biology to computer programming. Naturally, they need the technical skills to succeed. Depending on the complexity of the field and project, mora formal education is often required. Computer ScienceProgramming LanguagesStatisticsSystem Design and AnalysisConceptual, Logical, or Physical Data ModelingProcess ManagementAdvanced PhysicsStructural AnalysisNanotechnology Communication Engineering is very technical and relies on concise and accurate communicationbetween colleagues. But you will also have to communicate with people outside of the field, such as clients and sometimes the general public, who do not have a technical background. Its important that you are able to translate your special ized knowledge into terms that those within and outside your department can understand.Due to the highly technical demands, communication often proves one of the most challenging soft skills for engineers. Complexities have to be broken down into digestible words and concepts for your peers and managers. Emotional IntelligencePresentation SkillsActive ListeningMotivationNegotiationAbility to Clarify and ParaphraseStress Tolerance Project Management Frequently, engineers manage teams and must integrate with auxiliary departments while trying to meet deadlines on a budget. Because of the administrative demands required of most engineers, many of them go on to become CEOs and thought leaders. Like other professionals that need project management skills, some engineers seek aProject Management Certification. Some companies will offer their engineers the opportunity to get certified in project management. If you seek employment as an engineer and already have a bachelors degree, you can often find graduate programs at low cost that help you take and pass the PMI exam. Another type of project management training familiar to engineers isSix Sigma training. Based on the Japanese model of Just-in-Time Manufacturing, project managers trained in Six Sigma achieve colored belt titles (similar to martial arts) indicating their level of skill and achievement. Strategic PlanningRisk ManagementLeadershipCommunicationOrganizationSchedulingQuality ControlCritical Thinking Teamwork Engineers almost never work alone you will work with a wide range of employees, both fellow engineers and people outside your department, to bring your projects to fruition. This is the essence of department integration andcollaboration. You need to beable to work collaborativelywith different types of people at every level, applying skills as varied asverbal communicationand appropriate body language to goal-setting and prioritizing problems. You need the character and integrity that will ind uce other people to trust you and rely on you as you all work together. Creativity Engineering is fundamentally about problem solving and multi-tasking, and that means finding new ways to apply existing knowledge- a trulycreative process. You may be attracted to engineering because of its creative element. If you dont think of yourself as the creative type, you can practice thinking outside the box through unrestricted brainstorming, daydreaming, and play. Computer Modeling Computer modeling is the creation and maintaining of computer models which become simulations of complex systems. While modeling is not unique to engineering, it has become a critical component in many fields where engineering is vital. These models are used to predict how quickly a planned stadium might be evacuated in an emergency, how a power plant might behave if a critical component fails, and more. Not all engineers need the programming expertise to build models, but you willneed to understand how m odels work so that you know what kinds of problems can be simulated and what the simulations mean for your project. Higher Mathematics Gone are the days of calculating by hand and with slide rules, but the existence of computers does not free you from the need to understand math. In fact, since computers can only follow instructions, engineers must first figure outhow to solve numeric problems on their own before they can tell a computer what to do. Attention to Detail Projects in engineering are extraordinarily complex. They involve dozens, if not hundreds, of people. A small mistake at any point during planning, development, or construction can result in failure. A failed project not only loses money but could also injure or even kill people. More Engineering Skills While the skills above highlight to most important hard and soft skills required of top engineers, there are several others. If you love complexity and understanding the building blocks of innovation, many of these skills will come to you naturally. Engineering Resume How to Make Your Skills Stand Out Research Your Industry Engineers build, create, and modify in anenormous variety of complex fields. Whatever your industry, take time to research the specific technical skills required by employers.Match Your Skills to the Job When interviewing for an engineering position, make sure that your resume matches your skills, particularly the ones potential employers are looking for. In your cover letter and in the interview, it is appropriate to highlight any notable projects in which you played a role.Be Prepared to Share Examples Since engineers often manage others, it can be helpful to come to an interview prepared to share real-life examples of when you solved problems the situation, the problem, the outcome, what you did well, and how you might handle it differently the next time.

But a month later, that sensation is gone. Now its just a car. This satiation, known as hedonic adaptation, occurs for nearly everything that makes us happy. Look around and think of how much you initially enjoyed the things that surround you. Then think about how much you enjoy them today.Wouldnt it be great to get some of that initial enjoyment back?In a series of studies soon to be published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, we found that consuming things in unconventional ways enhances enjoyment of them. This is where chopsticks come in.The art of paying atte ntionIn one study, we asked 68 participants to eat some popcorn. While half were told to eat the normal way, one kernel at a time, the rest used chopsticks. We found that those who ate with chopsticks enjoyed the popcorn a lot more than the others, even though both groups were told to eat at the same slow pace. This is because of something well-known to psychologists When something seems new, people pay more attention to it. And when people pay more attention to something enjoyable, they tend to enjoy it more. This is why many people seek so much variety in what they consume. We buy something and use it for a while until it becomes familiar and mundane, then we buy something else thinking it will make us happy. Unfortunately, this replacement is costly, and, in cases such as houses and spouses, sometimes a very extreme option in response to unavoidable familiarity. Our research suggests another option Instead of replacing something once you get sick of it, try consuming it or interacti ng with it in unconventional ways.In another experiment, we studied 300 people as they consumed water.First, we asked participants to come up with their own unconventional ways to consume water. Their responses ranged from drinking out of a martini glass or travel mug to lapping it up like a cat. One even suggested drinking water out of a shipping envelope. They were then told to take five sips of water and rate their enjoyment after each drink. A third did so in the normal way, another third sipped using one of their own randomly chosen unconventional methods over and over and the rest used a different unconventional method for each sip.We found that people who drank water in a different way every time enjoyed their water the fruchtwein with even bigger boosts toward the end of the taste test. In other words, their enjoyment did not decline over time. While everyone else enjoyed the water less for each sip, those who drank it in different ways did not show this usual pattern of dec lining enjoyment. This presents a rare solution to the nearly universal phenomenon of satiation, or the declining enjoyment that comes with familiarity. As long as you can find new and interesting ways to interact with something, you may never grow tired of it.Business opportunitiesThis idea isnt entirely novel, of course. Many companies are already taking advantage of this concept to provide more enjoyable experiences for customers.Restaurants exist where diners eat while lying in beds, while hovering in the sky and off of naked models. There is even a restaurant where diners eat naked. The Reddit page WeWantPlates presents a rich catalog of the many creative and confusing ways that restaurants serve their customers food, from nachos in a sink to ravioli on a washing line. While there is no limit to the different ways to present the same old thing, at some point the novelty usually wears off. Our research suggests this is a missed opportunity for businesses to offer more variety in ho w a single food is consumed. For example, when people eat a few slices of pizza at a restaurant, they typically consume them all in the same way. Its a problem if people enjoy their last slice less because of satiation, because our memory for experiences is shaped heavily by what happened at the end.Rather than turning off all the lights to make dining more enjoyable, as in the dark-dining trend, pizza parlors could encourage their customers to eat each slice in a different way, such as normally, folded in half, backwards, with a fork and knife, with chopsticks or while blindfolded. If they did, we believe they would likely find that their customers enjoy their last slice as much as the first. The bottom line is that variety is the spice of life, not just in what we do but also how we do it. Knowing this can help both businesses and customers maximize enjoyment.Robert W. Smith, Assistant prof of Marketing, The Ohio State University and Ed OBrien, Assistant Professor of Behavioral Scie nce, University of ChicagoThis article was originally published on The Conversation. How to Manage a Negative Employee

How to Manage a Negative EmployeeHow to Manage a Negative EmployeeA negative employee can infect a workgroup or a team with negativity faster than you can imagine. An earlier article suggested how employees can deal with a negative coworker. Aleidher suggested how you can deal with workplace negativity when you determine that you are the negative employee. Its difficult to fess up, but sometimes the negative coworker is you. It takes a degree of self-awareness that many employees are incapable of practicing. Sometimes employee efforts are successful in dealing with a negative coworker and occasionally a person who exudes negativity realizes that they are the problem. But, since employees are leid skilled or trained, or comfortable at handling negativity or conflict, they often turn to their manager for help in dealing with the negative coworker. It is not the most pleasant component of a managers job, but if you manage people, you will eventually encounter a situation in which you ne ed to manage a negative person- for the sake of your other employees and the team. To avoid this sometimes scary task is to let down your workgroup and allow an unconscionable situation to exist. You can manage a negative employee- and sometimes- you can help the employee turn the negativity around. Your best approach is not to let the negativity get started in the first place, but if its already creating destruction in your workplace, here are steps that you can take to manage the negative employee. 7 Steps to Deal with a Negative Employee If the negativity emanates from a singleindividual, you can take these seven steps to solve the problem. Inform the Employee About Their Negative Impact Use specific examples that describe behaviors the employee can do something about in the workplace. For example, when another employee says, Good morning, how are you? and your response is a 15-minute monolog on how nothing is right in this workplace, you bring your coworkers mood and optimis m down. You use up to 15 minutes of productive work time and make your coworker unwilling to engage with you in conversation in the future. You risk your coworkers avoiding you at all costs which will affect your work effectiveness and productivity. You will not receive the information that you need to perform your job or make important contributions. Avoid Becoming Defensive Dont take the employees negative words or attitude personally. They are not directed at you. For whatever reason, the employee is unhappy with his or her life, work, or you name it. No one likes hearing constructive feedback even when a manager uses the best, most practiced, approach to minimize the employees defensiveness. And, the majority of managers have not had a lot of training and practice in dealing with difficult people, so their approach is uncomfortable for all parties. Ask the Employee If Something Negative Is Happening in Her Personal Life For example, a divorce affects every aspect of an employees life. The loss of a close family member does, too. Youre not a therapist or counselor, but knowing what is happening in the employees life lets you offer sympathy or another appropriate expression of good or hopeful wishes. It can also help the employee see that you are interested in and concerned about them as a person. Even as you offer sympathy, though, you must ask the employee tokeep the personal issues from affecting their workplace performance. Ask the Employee What Is Causing His Negativity at Work Listen to the employees complaints and concerns until youre certain that the employee feels heard out and listened to. Sometimes people repeat negative sentiments because they dont feel as if you have really heard them. Make sure that you have actively listened. The employee will feel the difference. Some of the employees concerns may be legitimate. You may be able to help them solve legitimate workplace concerns. Others, you may be able to explain why they exist and ask the emplo yee to cooperate and have patience. Once the employee understands the timeline, the decision or the reason for the goal, their negativity may improve. Focus on Creating Solutions Dont focus on everything that is wrong and negative about the employees outlook or actions in your approach. It will only cause the employee to dig himself more deeply into their grievances.Focus instead on creating options for how the employee can create positive morale for themselves and their co-workers going forward. If the person is unwilling to hold this discussion, and you feel you have fairly heard him out, end the discussion. You may need to begin the process of disciplinary action to reinforce the concepts you are sharing with the employee. Focus on the Positive Aspects of Her Performance Help the employee build their self-image and capacity to contribute. Talk to their about what they have done well and what their coworkers and you appreciate about their performance. Even during a conversation ab out a negative aspect of performance, reflecting on the positive is a welcome addition. In the Future, When Interacting With the Employee, Try to Compliment the Individual Any time you hear a positive stellungnahme or contribution rather than negativity from them, reinforce this attitude. Youll want to reinforce, as much as possible, the positive interactions the employee has with other employees and the workplace. If none of the above is working and the employees negativity continues to have an impact on productivity, workplace harmony, and department members attitudes and morale, deal with the negativity as you would any other performance issue. Useprogressive discipline which you apply effectively and legallyto the employees performance. Remember that these seven steps are worth your time before you become mired in the process of disciplinary action. Take heart from the fact that they frequently work when you hit an employees negativity head-on in your workplace.
