I Am 60. Is That Too Old to Become a Developer [Guest Post] - Career Pivot
I Am 60. Is That Too Old to Become a Developer [Guest Post] - Career Pivot I am 60. Is that past the point where it is possible to turn into a designer? There's a mainstream image circumventing the designer training camp world: I'm an unborn youngster. Is that too old to even think about starting figuring out how to code? Indeed, even twenty to thirty year olds ask it. Like uncovering themselves as an inconvenient learner would turn into a humiliating style proclamation? At the point when you turn 30, you have no involvement in being 30. No one has any involvement in the age they become, which means we're all amateurs at life. Along these lines, in case you're not learning, you're not living. I'm a sixty-something code-beginner who's been an item director and installments master for quite a while. I'm here to demonstrate that you're never too old to even consider starting another test like figuring out how to code, or another vocation. Here's thething Learning and endeavoring to turn into an engineer with some age and business-world experience can bring about colossal preferences. Those advantages will serve both you and the organization or customer that is going to employ you: 1. You have critical thinking creds. Rationale comes simpler in the wake of gaining some legitimacy identifications in the scout-troop of Life. 2. You better know the prizes of tolerance, perseverance and practice. 3. You have enthusiastic insight. That implies you can be a high-performing supporter of a group and coexist with everyone. 4. You are increasingly prepared to comprehend client experience and see the reasons why. Tune in to the latest scene 5. You add to assorted variety. How Older Developers Help Diversity Ageism is one of those predispositions that the vast majority are not even mindful of. Much more seasoned people can be advocates of codger-inclination in the event that they allude to themselves as cranky, difficult, or resolved. Large news! You have no an ideal opportunity for any of that drivel while checking a calculation. Like the best games mentors you had in school, more established life-prepared partners add the sauce of astuteness to young meat. Other than the advantages recorded above, they can improve group joint effort, execution, and common trust. The tech world needs tons more sex correspondence AND assorted variety, and that implies more ladies, increasingly dark and earthy colored skin, more homo-lesbian-trans, and certainly progressively more seasoned people. I'm assisting with filling two of those basins?â" ?the gays and the grays. My Path to Front End Developer My vocation as an item director was not requesting enough imaginative information. I was not getting the chances to put my consistent self-learning and self-obtained business information to full utilize. At some point, I got turned down for another job since I needed web and versatile experience. Also, that was the point at which I chose to change my concentration to learning some extremely hard stuff. The primary online course was One Month Rails and I got my first presentation to Bash, Sublime Text, and GitHub. At that point in one of their HTML courses, I coded my first static page and put it up on the web. Afterward, I showed myself how to wire-outline a versatile application and took a course from Udemy to attempt to assemble it in Swift code (difficult). By then about a year back, I turned to Free Code Camp and haven't quit developing. I trust it's the best free web based preparing for web improvement, since it shows you that it is so natural to swallow exercises and that it is so difficult to hack up genuine tasks and calculations. A half year later, I stopped my Free Code Camp tasks to assist two new companies with structure thoughts (for nothing). From that, I extended my FCC portfolio-page venture to a live site. I put in screen captures of my structure ideas, basic sites, and an organization video. I figured out how to include Google Analytics, meta labels, the Facebook share button, and a mess more. A month ago, something intriguing happened to speed things up: I got my first paid independent designer gig from a companion who claims a little neighborhood business. You'll have the option to see it later in my portfolio. I additionally found an incredible network called CodeNewbies and went to their astonishing Codeland gathering in New York City. Increasingly about that to come. So what have I gained from learning tocode? Other than reestablished clearness of direction and innovative fervor, here are five commonsense perceptions that have soaked in for me: 1. Free (and practically free) assets are unending. I decided not to consider a paid training camp until I had depleted everything free on the Internet. However, the more I know, the farther this free gracefully seems to extend. 2. The coder ecosphere is a giving network, and I'm attracted to a culture that way. It compensates and compliments brilliant individuals who part with information to benefit all. What's more, we should express gratitude toward Google and others like them. The Big G may be the biggest cash machine ever, yet it gives the world a great deal of free information. 3. Making stuff is the genuine learning. The crucial step is the important part. The objective is learning enough to make the proof that you can?â" ?and will?â" ?get paid to make great stuff each day. In this way, do now. 4. Figuring out how to code improves tangible and transient memory. Prior to this, I was unable to review a telephone number recent seconds. No more. It feels like my eye-to-cerebrum coordination has gotten increasingly imprintable. Gazing at JQuery capacities and shading picking hex codes may do that for you. Note: Millennials may not get this idea. Being the main infants brought into the world after the innovation of computer games, many grew up with a characteristic eye-hand intellectual congruity. At the point when Mark Zuckerberg expressed that Youngsters are simply more astute, this may be what he implied. Also, my last point: 5. Figuring out how to code makes you more intelligent and more youthful. This has been my experience over the previous year with Free Code Camp, Hack Reactor prep, and finishing ventures. Better believe it, some administrative work says I'm more established than everyone in the room, yet who cares. I have an incentive to give the world and nothing to lose. So tune in up, children (and every other person). Disregard excessively old to figure out how to code, since it's rarely past the point of no return. Awkward amateurs are cool! This post was composed byChuck Phipps. Hurl is a best in class website specialist in Austin, and a boomer who chose to make a genuine profession rotate from item chief to engineer. That is on the grounds that I have no designs to resign . . . ever., he says, and accepts that it's never past the point where it is possible to begin another test. His claim to fame was ability in the installments business, however now wants to support new businesses and non-benefits with UX and structure. He tweets as @chucphi and is an author on Medium.com for Startup Grind. Work tests and more blog entries are at http://chuckphipps.me Figuring out how to Code at 60 was initially post on Medium in April of 2017. Like what you simply read? Client Development What To Do When Your Phone Is Not Ringing
Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Client Development: What to do when your phone is not ringing What would you do when the phone is not ringing and it seems the well is dry? A lawyer I coach recently asked me that question. He was concerned that he might sound desperate if he called clients and asked if they had any work for him or called referral sources and asked if they had any referrals they could make for him. I told him he would indeed sound desperate. Clients do not want their lawyers to be âneedyâ or âgreedy.â What client would hire a lawyer with the look of the guy in this photo? During my career when the phone wasnât ringing I did these three things. If the phone is not ringing, it is important not to lose confidence. You have to believe in yourself at those times more than ever. When the phone isnât ringing, it is less likely a reflection on you as it is your clients simply have no work for you. Figure out ways you can add value. Identify other potential clients and figure out how you can become visible and credible to them. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

5 Tips for Job Seekers Who Want to Work for a Nonprofit 5 Tips for Job Seekers Who Want to Work for a Nonprofit Regardless of whether you are an ongoing alumni or hoping to make a lifelong change, working in the philanthropic business can be inconceivably satisfying. The majority of us will at last spend most of our waking hours at work, so why not go through those hours energetically engaged in an occupation where you can do your part to affect humankind? At any rate, that is the way I felt after I left a three-week-old employment in the revenue driven division to go work for a nonprofit. That was 13 years prior, and I havent thought back since. To assemble the accompanying tips, I enrolled the assistance of some previous partners and partners â" 27 of them, to be accurate. These 27 not-for-profit representatives extend from program chiefs to fundraisers, from legal advisors to official executives. Some have been working in the not-for-profit field for as little as 10 months, others for more than 32 years. Here is the thing that they â" and I â" needed to state: 1. System With Other People Who Work in Nonprofit Approach loved ones for presentations. Scrutinize LinkedIn to discover associations and send deliberately created customized messages to individuals you are keen on connecting with. By and large, meet the same number of individuals as you would who be able to work in or know individuals in the not-for-profit industry. 2. Set Up Informational Interviews With Organizations You Admire Take your systems administration to the following level. Contact the charities you are keen on becoming familiar with. I have discovered that a great many people in the not-for-profit world are glad to help. 3. Assistant! Bounce Right Into the Volunteer Experience Full-Time or Part-Time Hands-on charitable experience will open numerous entryways. On the off chance that you can stand to give a few or the entirety of your time as an understudy or office volunteer, you will increase extremely valuable experience and keep on hardening your philanthropic system. 4. Go to Conferences and Join Groups Geared Toward the Nonprofit Sector This, obviously, will assist you with growing your philanthropic system (see tip No. 1). 5. Return to School â" or if nothing else Take Some Courses/Workshops in Your Area of Interest This will likewise assist you with extending your system. Be that as it may, dont go through an over the top measure of cash previously â" you got it â" you system to ensure you are settling on an informed and completely investigated choice. â" Recall that your past experience, regardless of whether as an understudy or a revenue driven representative, can interpret and turn into a looked for after resource for philanthropies. Nonetheless, you ought to be cautious about strolling into another open door with a lot of certainty. Be available to learning, pose bunches of inquiries, and in particular, be a cooperative person. Most philanthropic representatives destroy numerous caps of need. Take their lead and be eager to extend past the expected set of responsibilities. Similarly as with any activity, there can be disappointments. There was a period at one of my past employments when we couldnt stand to supplant the shaded ink, and I urgently expected to print several solicitations for an up and coming pledge drive. There were a few times when our PCs and servers slammed, putting us days behind in work. We couldnt stand to supplant them. And afterward there is the Fortune 100 of philanthropies â" you know, those national associations that really have showcasing spending plans and can pay for extravagant PSAs and superstar influencers? Ive likewise had the delight of working for one of those. They can be brilliant and truly give you the feeling that you are affecting thousands, if not millions, of individuals â" yet you may likewise be facing the same amount of administration and formality as you would be at a revenue driven organization. For all the trade offs charitable representatives frequently need to make, I asked my previous partners: Whats the best thing about working in not-for-profit? Here are a couple of my preferred reactions â" ones that I wholeheartedly concur with: - My work has genuine significance. - Feeling absolutely enthusiastic about the reason. - Working in a spot that draws in individuals who care about things past monetary profit. - Knowing that my work has an effect. - Working with astounding individuals in this area that really need to do great. - Discovering a genuine enthusiasm for helping other people. - At the day's end, regardless of how terrible of a day youve had, you realize that somebody some place is in an ideal situation since you came to work that day. What's more, my undisputed top choice: - You get paid to have any kind of effect on the planet. What a fantasy work out! So go out there and system, contact bunches you are enthusiastic about, form your help group, and join this unfathomable universe of individuals who cannot hold on to meet you. How to Deal When Your Coworkers Ask Awkward Questions
Step by step instructions to Deal When Your Coworkers Ask Awkward Questions On the off chance that it hasnt transpired at this point, it will. Youll be guiltlessly, serenely relaxing in the lounge, kitchen or another mutual space. Youll be perched on some furniture intended to be fun and practical that has begun to show its age, lamentably, and the one thing that you never thought would occur, will occur. Your work environment will change from the unspoiled, simple, social heaven you thought it was for the primary month (or week, or day) you worked there, and transform into its most genuine structure: a safe house for partners and supervisors who ask amazingly awkwardquestions. This will occur. Nothing is unadulterated. So how would you bargain? There are a couple of alternatives: 1.Be incredibly genuine. This is the snappiest method to make your partner similarly as awkward as you may be. Whenever you hear You dont look so great this week. Have you showered? feel free to tell themall the violent subtleties of your sinus disease, period spasms or stomach influenza. Is it accurate to say that you are pregnant? can be effectively met with Oh, no, yet I do wish I was, and weve been attempting, and on the off chance that you have time it would truly assist with conversing with somebody about it. The more fair you can be, the better. Proceed, share how you got that peculiar rash. Inquiries concerning family? Cash? That's right, in the event that you let them have the grimy subtleties, even only a single time, I guarantee theyll never ask again. 2. Change the point completely. Dont I need to make American incredible once more? You know, clever you asked, on the grounds that I have been pondering getting a standing work area, and I truly cant choose if it would improve my center muscles all that much If you dont need to discuss it, dont. 3. Toss it back atem. Now and then trustworthiness can be utilized to accomplish something beyond drive individuals away. In the event that you love your activity 99 percent of the time and might want to proceed with joyfully working there, take a stab at offering yourself a couple profound breathsand then response the inquiry, sincerely. Regardless of whether it makes you somewhat awkward or makes you become flushed from the start, being profoundly imminent can frequently assemble trust. It very well may be anything but difficult to turn into excessively private at work, working in our own little zones. This can cause us to appear to be stodgy, aloof, and like were keeping something down. Dont keep down! You dont need to recount to anybody your biography, however whenever the lady sitting close to you at lunch inquires as to whether youve experienced a separation recently, you can say Yes. You can even say Yes, and it was hard, yet Im improving at this point. What's more, in the eve nt that you truly need to manufacture that work environment fellowship? You can feel free to ask her, Have you? (That is presumably what she truly needs to discuss, in any case.) 4. Cause a commotion to the sky. Once in a while the cumbersome inquiries posed by partners arent simply idiosyncratic; theyre stunning and possibly even hostile. As an out lesbian in the work environment, Im regularly posed intrusive inquiries about my own life and sexual coexistence, generally by individuals I scarcely know. In the event that you feel shocked and awkward in a discussion, its totally legitimate to communicate that distress. I like to respond normally: Excuse me? I cannot trust you asked me that! or then again even Wow. For what reason would you pose that inquiry? At the point when combined with a look that reflects the mistrust and dissatisfaction Im feeling inside, this response can be a definitive discussion ender. Nobody ever needs to feel like theyve said an inappropriate thing. However, in some cases, shockingly, individuals do. Furthermore, its alright to tell them that it's caused you to feel ungainly. On the off chance that youve attempted these alternatives, and your 3D shape mate despite everything demands getting some information about your compensation, sexual coexistence or profound convictions and makes for cumbersome second after unbalanced second, you may very well need to give them the quiet gaze and scowl. Its Over
Its Over 2009 is over. The entire decade is over. Its all history. I hope you did stuff you were proud of. I did a few things Im proud of, and have a few projects that will roll over to next year. I even have a project Ill rollover for anytime next decade. The point is, no matter what you wanted to do, no matter what your good intentions were, its too late to count them for this last year or decade. What you choose to do now, each day, each month, each year, is a part of the legacy you leave. Hopefully your legacy will be rich and meaningful, not a simple byline. You, I, we, have the power to do and change. So get busy. Or, as Dory from Finding Nemo sings, just keep swimming, just keep swimming! Its Over 2009 is over. The entire decade is over. Iâm Heather Marianna, creator of Beauty Kitchen, an all-natural beauty and skincare line with whimsical products including red wine eye gels, chocolate sugar scrub, watermelon lip mask, bath bombs, clay masks and more. On my YouTube channel, I post a ton of fun DIY beauty treatments using common kitchen household ingredients ( a lot of my videos have over 3 million views, yipppeee!) and with football season around the corner, I wanted to share one of my most popular segments with you guys: How To Turn Popular Football Party Foods into DIY beauty treatments. I came up with this idea, while helping set up a football viewing party for my boyfriend and his friends. Iâm not really one into sports, so naturally I just prided myself upon throwing a kick ass party for everyone to enjoy. While the guys were busy yelling at the screen, I was preparing a few party foods for them to indulge in. I had a handful of leftover ingredients and never one to be wasteful, I decided to whip up a few beauty masks that I could experiment with and enjoy during the rest of the game. Eliminating The Nerves Of Networking - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Eliminating The Nerves Of Networking - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Do you walk away from networking situations feeling like it was a display of your best you? Or do you walk out the door feeling like you missed out on great relationships simply because you were too nervous? Looking at those who network best, it seems to be some natural trait that they were born with. After leaving a conversation with one, you are left with a memorable overview of not only of them, but also their views. They also tend to be the ones you first reach out to after an event to continue the connection and conversation. For some, this ability is natural. For many, it is a learned trait that is self-taught using a variety of techniques. My personal technique is through IMPACT GENERATING OVERVIEW creation. For each area of importance regarding my persona brand I compact them down into a few short key points/sentences. Your IGOs are living entities, and you should revisit them before each event to tailor them to your perspective audience and personal goals. This technique really helps my client Shea because it decreases the chance of letting nerves get the better of her, which used to happen quite frequently. It increases her confidence level, allowing her to be clear and concise when speaking with those she wants to inspire and/or influence. Recently, Shea was in Hawaii for the Menâs Surf Triple Crown, which was a great networking event for her to seek out new sponsors and environmental partners. Beforehand she established IGOs for herself, highlighting the key details below. You (Shea) â"Iâm a Hawaiian born free surfer living in Cardiff, Ca. I recently made the decision to focus on being able to live life on the ocean supporting myself through my surfing. Job/Career path â"Pushing the limits of free surfing that will get people excited about womenâs surfing. For 2012, video creation will be a main vehicle along with the innovative and active partnerships I am building with my sponsors. Involvement (charitable, hobby) â" Being in the water everyday I experience firsthand how our ocean has changed over the years. Other than working locally with communities on their environmental needs where I travel to surf, I am exploring with company partners ways to recycle used surf wax until more surfers start using the eco-friendly versions. Sport (free surfing) â" Surfing for the beauty and the sport itself in the best locations around the world. I care about pushing the limits athletically in surfing and not surfing for a score. Areas for you may also include â" passion (faith, etc), vision, business ventures, family, etc. While it may seem like a lot, these are topics you touch on almost every time you meet someone new or reacquaint yourself with someone you havenât seen in a long time. Most likely you will never speak the IGO sentences verbatim, but you will be aware of the 3 significant details and keep to the point. It then becomes up to the listener to inquire about hearing more simply because they want to. Are you confident going into networking events? Do you have a technique you particularly like? 5 Pointers For Giving Great Interview Feedback
5 Pointers For Giving Great Interview Feedback Imagine spending hours preparing for an interview, scheduling time off from your current job to attend and then giving your everything to a probing hiring manager, only to never hear back about where you went wrong and why you didnt get the job. It would be terribly frustrating and youd likely want little to do with that company in future. Withholding candidate feedback after an unsuccessful interview is an extremely damaging choice that many companies make. Theres a lot of talk about how important it is for organisations to offer an excellent candidate experience, but who sets the rules as to what this actually means? Its up to individual businesses to decide how they choose to go about attracting talent, but one non negotiable element to a great recruitment method is the timely provision of feedback to unsuccessful applicants. Granted, it can be extremely time consuming relaying perceived strengths and weaknesses to each candidate, hence why its so important to put in place a simple feedback process. Even if a person isnt perfect for the role heyve just interviewed for, neglecting them afterwards will give them a terrible impression of the business and is likely to discourage all future engagement and probably give you a bad reputation within their wider network. You might not feel the negative effects of failing to provide feedback immediately, but youll ultimately be shooting yourself in the foot in the long run. Take a look at the following tips to help you get it right: 1. Use pre-made scorecards It goes without saying that before an interview, you need to be really clear on what it is you are assessing the candidate on. Instead of taking down notes next to each question, try creating a template where you can record performance against various specific metrics. It can be extremely difficult to scribe and listen at the same time, so you might find your notes are hard to decipher afterwards. Creating a simple system to rate a candidates abilities, skills and behaviour will help you take away more thorough information and make for easier direct comparison with others. 2. Summarise and file feedback immediately after This one is especially important for hiring managers who are interviewing multiple candidates in one go. To avoid forgetting important details about a candidates performance and your overall impression of them, always compile and summarise your notes immediately afterwards, and be sure to record them on your applicant tracking system. 3. Relay, dont delay Dont wait an unnecessarily long amount of time before providing candidates with feedback. If you have to wait to complete other interviews before making a decision, let them know this is the case when they leave. If you know however, that they are unsuccessful, let them know as soon as possible. The longer you keep them waiting, the longer theyll spend feeling anxious and the harder the blow will be when they find out theyre unsuccessful. 4. Be honest but constructive Feedback is supposed to outline how a candidate has performed. There is no need to rip an ill-performing candidate to shreds all in the name of honesty, but its also unhelpful to gloss over mistakes. Feedback should provide unsuccessful candidates with compelling reason/s they werent selected to move forward. The feedback should be constructive and help the job seeker to be better at their next interview. Feedback shouldnt be a soul-crushing experience that points out a million and one ways they arent right for the role, nor should it be a ego-boosting activity where you falsely commend sub-par candidates and fail to justify the negative outcome. Using examples will help you to explain your choices. 5. Always end on a good note Regardless of the outcome, you should always end the interview process on a good note with all candidates. Just because a candidate slipped up or failed to convince you they are the person for your vacancy, doesnt mean they wont be the perfect fit for another opportunity in your team in the future. Even if you are 100% sure they will never be of value to your company, you cant assume they dont know someone who might be. When it comes to winning over top talent, a companys reputation can be a life-saver or a deal-breaker, so dont go burning bridges! Providing candidates with helpful and timely feedback will not only win you respect from the candidate market in the long run, but will also set you apart from all the frustrating businesses out there who neglect unsuccessful interviewees at the earliest chance. Even though breaking bad news is never fun to do, it will get easier each time, so start providing proper feedback now!

How to Write a Successful Resume and Cover Letter
How to Write a Successful Resume and Cover LetterWriting a successful resume and cover letter can be tricky especially when it comes to finding the right combination of details to get your application into the right hands. This is especially true if you are looking for a job at one of the larger accounting firms or major corporations. So how do you find out which information works best?Well the first and most effective way to write a successful resume and cover letter is to know what they are looking for. Most prospective employers will not take the time to read what you have to say in your resume but they will definitely see your resume and cover letter as they have all others that have been sent out. They will take notice of your skills, qualifications and experience and make an assessment as to whether you are the right person for the job.A great way to find out what is expected from you is to attend some corporate events. By attending these events you will be able to meet the man agers and leaders of the firm as well as learn more about the position you are applying for. It may even be possible to find out what type of personal environment they would like to work in if you do not wish to work in their office. With this information you will be able to tailor your resume and cover letter to their expectations. There are also some things you can do to ensure that your resume is very targeted. For example, do not include personal details such as your name, telephone number or email address in your resume. Most applicants make the mistake of including these details on their resume, thinking that this will be an automatic pass and the application will not be rejected. However, these details can be seen by the management team as it could be seen as a negative aspect and you could find yourself being turned down at the interview stage.Other interesting areas to look at are the qualifications that the applicants have obtained. These are usually provided on the end of their resume and cover letter and should be highlighted. You can use your knowledge of the firm and perhaps ask about specific skills the applicant has acquired. If you are not sure about the level of skills required, there are free resources available that will give you a fair idea.In addition to professional qualifications you should take time to highlight the skills and interests that you are seeking. This is going to be of particular value to those who have recently graduated or are in the early stages of their career. These are people who are often searching for job openings but who have been unable to get these jobs. With this information you can build a good picture of the applicant as well as using it to help you get a better assessment of whether or not the applicant is the right person for the job.The key to writing a successful resume and cover letter is to make the whole process as streamlined as possible. Try to find out what is expected of the applicant and work hard t o produce a resume and cover letter that will be well received. You should also make sure that the CV you submit has been checked for accuracy and that it includes correct contact details. You should also write a resume and cover letter that is relevant to the position you are applying for.The problem with many people is that they spend far too much time worrying about the things that they do not need to worry about. Writing a successful resume and cover letter is not rocket science and should not be taken for granted. With the right preparation and application you will have no problems at all getting a successful application and a job.

Tell Recruiters Youre Looking (Without Your Boss Finding Out) Tell Recruiters Youre Looking (Without Your Boss Finding Out) Job Search / LinkedIn Profiles While being employed makes you more appealing to employers, looking for a new job while working full-time can be challenging. LinkedIn recently introduced a new program for job seekers that makes looking for a job on LinkedIn easier. With this new program, you can alert recruiters that youâre open to new opportunities without broadcasting it to the world. This new program takes only a few minutes to set up on your LinkedIn account. The bonus is itâs free. Once you turn on Job Alerts LinkedIn directs you to your Career Interests page where you can set preferences for: Location (bonus you can add more than one) Level of experience (from entry to executive level) Industry (again, allows more than one) Size of company (small, mid-sized, large) Type of opportunity (full-time or contract) Job titles or roles that interest you Hereâs a peek at what that looks like Additionally, youâre able to set your profile so that job posters are able to see your entire profile when you apply for jobs. LinkedIn will share your interests with recruiters for 90 days, at which point your selections will reset. LinkedIn notes that this is to keep your information relevant and up-to-date. Regarding privacy, while LinkedIn states that they cannot guarantee your privacy only recruiters who use LinkedInâs Recruiter will have access to your preferences and interest information. LinkedIn protects job seekers through the use of unique company identifiers. If a recruiterâs âCompany IDâ is the same as the âCompany IDâ of your current employer on your LinkedIn profile that recruiter shouldnât see your âcareer interest preferences.â Still there is no guarantee of privacy. Of course, this new program makes it easier for recruiters to source candidates as well. Getting a heads up that people are open to new opportunities takes the fear out of making unwelcome overtures to potential candidates who arenât interested. So if youre actively looking or just open to hearing about new opportunities, take a few minutes to set your preferences today. Updated 2/13/19

How to benefit from job search technology -
How to benefit from job search technology - If youre in an active job search, you know using technology to your advantage is key to your success. Youre encouraged to use social media to expand your network and demonstrate your expertise. Your resume needs to overcome applicant tracking systems to win an interview, and video interviews are becoming the norm for busy companies seeking efficient mechanisms to screen and select the best candidates. Something you may be surprised to encounter: the one-way interview. In this situation, employers request candidates record video responses to a series of pre-drafted questions. Then employers review the video at their convenience. Employers benefit from this approach, as they can easily review the video interview responses while looking over candidates written application materials. But if you prepare well, you can make the most of this type of interview, too. Josh Tolan is the CEO of Spark Hire, a video resume and video interviewing platform. He offers the following tips for job seekers to make the most of one-way interviews: Treat these interviews with as much respect as any interview. Even though there is no one on the other end of the video camera, you should still treat these interviews as you would any important opportunity. Identify the benefits. One of the major benefits of one-way video interviews is that employers present candidates one pre-drafted question at a time. Set the stage. Tolan explains, If youre talking about how detail-oriented you are, for instance, in front of a giant pile of laundry, this is going to undercut your message. Make sure your background is clean and professional before you turn on your webcam. Enjoy the benefits. Job seekers, even passive candidates, can easily fit one-way video interviews into even the most packed schedule. While this type of interview seems a little unconventional, remember, the employer is investing a lot of time and effort into making it work. Focus on how you can do your best and consider practicing in front of the video camera in advance so youll be well prepared to tackle this innovative interview technique confidently.
